A Night of Big Stars: Founders Presents Legacy Award

BBBSA_LOGO_PURPLE_AND-BLACK_VERTICALBig Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham recently held their 6th Annual A Night of Big Stars, an event that showcases talented “Littles” that Big Brothers Big Sisters serves. This year the Littles were joined by Taylor Hicks. Because of the amazing support shown to this event, Big Brothers Big Sisters  is able to continue to match children facing adversity with caring and supportive mentors who change their lives for the better, forever.

At the recent 6th Annual Big Brothers Big Sisters A Night of Big Stars, Founders was honored to preset the Legacy Award. The Founder’s Legacy Award was created last year By Founders Advisors Managing Partner Duane Donner, who has been a long-term supporter of the agency, a Board member and has served as a Big Brother in the program, even winning Big Brother of the year.  The award honors an individual or company who significantly impacts mentoring in the community, who serves as a positive role model to children and all citizens, and who gives significantly to impact the lives of children in the Birmingham area.This award was established to recognize individuals, corporations, or groups who have made a significant impact on Big Brothers Big Sisters through a consistent and meaningful investment over time.  In this case, those who have served as positive role models in our community over an extended amount of time. This year’s award winners were Bill and Judy Lewis. Bill served on the Board of Directors for 10 years, dedicating his time for two of those years to lead as Board President. Bill helped the agency with a successful Capitol Campaign that raised funding to purchase and renovate the offices the agency is currently housed in, and lead the agency in strategic, long-term planning.  His wife, Judy, has been equally dedicated to the Big Brother Big Sister mission both serving as a Big Sister and serving on the Board of Directors.

Since 1973, Big Brothers Big Sisters has provided positive adult role models for youth through its programs. Their mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported relationships that change their lives for the better. The initiatives of Big Brothers Big Sisters improve self-esteem and improve the opportunities the youth served have to achieve success in academic, social, and family lives.

Big Brothers Big Sisters currently has three programs that serve over 1,200 youth each year. Through the community-based program over 350 children are served each year. The School-Based mentoring program that serves students at 32 schools in their five county service area. The Proof Positive Workplace Mentoring Program in 2013 and has expanded to serve 66 youth who are mentored through five company/organization sites in our community.
